It is now Christmas day and Dessa Dean has started to prepare the Christmas food; she puts the dog's Christmas bone out on the porch to cool off when she thinks she hears the dog start to eat it, but it was not the dog, it was a big, but very skinny and very hungry, she-bear. The bear came right into the house and started to devour all the food, however the dog came in and chased the bear away, fallowing her deep into the woods. It was not until after she had seen a trail of blood that she forced herself to go and save the dog; but she soon became lost and the snow whisked away all prints, then she was taken by a daymare. She awoke to the dog at her side and as soon as she was on her feet the dog began to lead her, eventually when Dessa Dean could no longer walk on her own, the dog leaned into her leg and they walked until she fell at the porch of their cabin, where Daddy was standing, about to leave in search of her. The next morning Dessa Dean awoke in her own bed, Daddy by her side and she told him what had happened then, they went to Willow Creek for a feast and Dessa Dean found the dog's true name: Leanin' Dog.
