In the book "The Cage" by Ruth Minsky Sender, tells about a girl named Riva encounters and also lives through the Holocaust. Riva, her mom and three brothers Laibele, Motele, and Moishele live together while Laibele is terribly sick. Riva, Mama, Motele, and Moishele are working trying to get as much food ration as they can to bring home and eat together. Mama's closest friend betrayed her and took her Mama's stuff.A little while after, the Nazi's were lining the sick from the healthy, they took Mama away. Riva, and her three little brothers all alone with no parent to take care of them. Soon after that Riva started to get sick, as in her legs started to swell and she tried to walk but every time she tried she fell down instantly. Child services came to take them and put them in separate homes but Riva fought and won. Riva won but the only way to keep her little brothers was to sign away her rights as a child and become the legal guardian for Laibel, Motele, and Moishele.
