This information promotes water safety.   Please read it and view the videos with your student.

When you arrive at any pool meet the lifeguards that are paid to keep you safe.   Review the rules and expectations.
SAFETY IS ALWAYS FIRST

Beginning swim skills should be taught in shallow water where you can touch.  A student should be encouraged but never forced to do a new skill.  No one should ever push or throw a student into the water.  "The sink or swim method is not safe or acceptable."  An explaination and demonstration will increase the comfort level of the learner.  The more you try, the faster you will learn, and the better you will swim.

If you can hold your breath, paddle your hands, and kick your feet then you can swim.    Try  these skills on dry land.  Can you do them?     Great!!   You will be able to swim.

Very young students will learn to swim with lifejackets on first.  If they are comfortable they may have the lifejacket off during supervised lessons only.  With direct adult supervision and permission.              DON'T JUST PACK IT WEAR YOUR JACKET!

The first lesson you need is that of bouyancy.  A beach ball is full of air and floats on top of the water no matter how deep it is.  You have air in your lungs and will also float on top just like a beach ball.  Check out the short swim instruction videos.  I have up loaded them from You tube to my web site Resources.

Front glide and crawl stroke, underwater swim, back float, and back stroke should be viewed first.

Many of the video's are not in English.  Observe the swim strokes for form and bouyancy principles.  Swimming is universal in any language.

Breaststroke and Butterfly are advanced skills used for racing on swim teams.

Every Olympic Swimmer was once a beginner!

Keep swimming!!  Practice the skills learned to increase endurance.  Take more lessons through the Red Cross, the Y,  or join Sailfish swim team.   Always remember this SAFETY information and stay safe around the water  :)
