3rd Grade will be an exciting year for your child.  This year the goal is for students to become "independent" in their learning in all 4 subject areas: English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies,
3rd Grade is also your child's first year for State Testing.  The State Tests will be in the areas of ELA (English Language Arts) and Mathematics.

 
Here is a brief description of the New York State Curriculum for 3rd Grade:
ELA: includes reading instruction, writing instruction and using the Fountas and Pinnell Word Study Lessons to focus on phonics, spelling, and vocabulary.

Math: Number Sense and Operations, Estimation, Algebra, Geometry Shapes, Measurement, and Statistics and Probability.

Science: Rocks and Minerals, Structures of Buildings, Chemical Test, Stystems and Interactions, and Plant Growth/Development

Social Studies: explore different world communities, compares the role of citizens in different political systems around the world, understand the concept of historic chronology, and provide students with an opportunity to learn about the social, political, geographic, economic, and historical characteristics of the worlds peoples and cultures.

Students will also learn how to write in CURSIVE this year and in Math they will learn all of their MULTIPLICATION FACTS.
