Second Grade

Welcome to second grade!  We have many exciting things planned this year in music.  We plan to continue to work on hearing and showing a steady beat by using movement, rhythm instruments, a hot potato, mallet instruments and boomwhackers.  Some of the songs we will learn while working on steady beat are:  "Old Mrs. Mitch", "Hot Potato", "Waddaly Atcha",and "Mama Paquita".  We will also listen for a steady beat in some classical music and marches.  In many of these activities, we will listen for different tempos (speed) that the steady beat goes.  We will also sing songs that change tempo, such as "I Have A Car."

We will continue the Rhythm Band curriculum that we started last year.  We read symbols on charts and play the corresponding instrument (to the steady beat.)  We will also expand our knowlege of rhythm patterns that include quarter notes, quarter rests and eight notes and add half notes.

We also plan to learn a little about dynamics (volume).  We will listen to music to show that we hear the different dynamics in music.

We will also learn to read the lines and spaces on the music staff in the treble clef.  After February, ask a second grader what "Every Good Boy Does Fine" or the word "FACE" mean.
