Third Grade

Welcome to third grade! We have a very busy year planned.  We will spend a lot of time this year learning to read music in the treble clef.  By the end of the year, students should be able to play a song on bells that they have read and taught themselves.  Some of those songs are: "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star", "Row, Row, Row Your Boat",and "Mary Had A Little Lamb".   The process of learning to read music will include reading rhythm and melody cards, reading and singing songs, using bells, rhythm instruments, Orff instruments and Boomwhackers.  Students will also learn some of the rhythmic names of notes, instead of the nicknames that we use when we count them.

Some of the songs that we will learn this year are: "Concentration", "The Hammer Song","John Kanaka", "Sarasponda", "I Pass The Stone", "Lines and Spaces", and "America, The Beautiful".  They will learn to play some ostinatos on the metalaphones and glockinspiels.  Some of these parts they will read the music themselves to learn how to play them.

We will also learn to identify different instruments of the orchestra.  We will work to be able to put the picture, name and sound of instruments together.

We will also be exposed to classical music this year.  Students should be able to identify eight pieces of music by the end of the year.  These are: "The William Tell Overture", ""Air on a G String", Russian Sailor's Dance", "Little Train of the Capaira", "Sabre Dance", "Morning", "The Comedians" and "Stars and Stripes Forever"  We hope to have a great year and watch students working toward becoming great musicians.
