Common Core Module 2 Unit 1
"Letter from the Birmingham Jail" by Martin Luther King

This is an exciting adventure for the students as they explore how Martin Luther King develops his argument for direct action on civil rights.  The students begin to analyze how central ideas emerge and develop in King's letter, and also how the author uses rhetoric to advance his point of view and purpose.

English 12

 The students will be working on a research paper involving the choice of a government scandal.  They will be responsible to choose an appropriate topic, locate credible sources using the databases, create an annotated Works Cited page, take notes from the sources on notecards using 4 simple rules, organize the notecards, develop an outline, write a rough draft, edit the rough draft and print a final copy with title page.
