ABL

Adventure Based Learning is found in many of our intermediate classes.  Classroom teachers use the Full Value Contract as an integral part of their classroom management plan.  Teachers work with trained ABL facilitators to learn physical challenge based activities to use with their students to encourage leadership, develop team skills and to promote self-esteem.   Students also have the opportunity to work with the facilitators in their classes on a bi-monthly basis.  Classes do a two-day visit to the "ropes course" in the spring to put their learned skills to the ultimate tests.  As the result of this program, we have seen dramatic changes in students' behaviors and willingness to work together to problem solve or accomplish multiple tasks. Rather than use a "conflict manager" type program that seems to promote solving negative problems and focuses on only a few students, we have chosen ABL as it promotes students' interactions in a positive manner.  ABL serves more students rather than a chosen few.  It also seems to have a stronger link to life long skills.

Adventure Based Learning continues for fourth and fifth grade students during the summer months through our intensive two week "Camp Adventure" program.  For some students, this may be an introduction to ABL skills and games.  For others it is an extension of learning that began in their classrooms.  More opportunities are given for physical challenges on the ropes course during this period.  Students also plan and participate in an overnight as part of the skill-based learning.  This group continues to meet throughout the year after school and goes into primary classes to teach younger students cooperative games and skills.
