Visiting Authors

If you were to come to Coburn and ask any student what the most important thing we do at school is-- most often the response would be: READ, READ, READ! We take the responsibility of instilling a love of reading and writing seriously. To help achieve this, Coburn plans promotional activities such as inviting a well-known author to come to Coburn. In the past we have invited Brod Baggert, a wonderful children's poet, Brian and Andrea Pinkney, author/illustrators whose books are about African-American folktales, and famous American, and Nicole Ruebel who invented the Rotten Ralph character. Another favorite author who returns often is local children's author, Tedd Arnold.

The student's "getting to know the author" starts weeks before the actual visit. Teachers introduce the author through in-depth experiences with books written by that author. It is not unusual to see special projects on display or book characters come alive in the hallways.

Visit day is filled with great excitement as children anticipate the opportunity to talk to real writers.  The author, greeted by a welcoming ceremony Coburn population, is given the red carpet treatment. Students will then visit with the author and start to understand how authors write and how a book or character is developed.

There is no doubt that the memories created by these visits will last a lifetime for Coburn Students.
