September 2016 Highlights:

What a wonderful first month of music! We've spent these first few weeks of the year getting to know our new classmates and getting used to working together to make music!

Here is a video of third graders performing the sea shanty "John Kanaka." A sea shanty is a work song that, when performed, helps groups work together to complete manual labor on a ship. Instead of performing manual labor ourselves, we demonstrated that we can work together by performing a folk dance with partners in concentric circles. We also figured out parts of the melody on Orff instruments. Everyone's favorite activity, however, can be seen in the video below. We drummed rhythms and used our knowledge of form to help us perform a cup-passing game! After this video was recorded, we even added some of our own improvised rhythms to perform in a call-and-response style that is often found in sea shanties.
