In the Secrets in the Fire by Henning Mankell Sofia and Maria face many challenges in this part of the book.Sofia soon notices that Maria died and she doesn't have any  memories so she does not know why she is in pain or why her sister died.After she was in the hospital for a long time she figured out that she lost her legs and that she could not walk dance or run.A nurse came in one day and said  that she was healthy enough that she could go to and old people home and she would learn how to walk with artificial legs. So after she got sent to the old peoples home she felt lonely and she also figured out that it was her fault that her sister died and did not want to be seen. But latter and new girl came that was here age and had one leg missing her name was Hortenca. Hortenca learned how to walk just like Sofia but she learned so fast that Hortenca left and they would never see each other again. That is some of the challenges that Sofia faced.
