In the book, one of those hideous books where the mother dies, Ruby does not get upset when a kid named Devon dies. Its not like she knew the kid, though. when she is asleep she has a dream about her mom on the phone with her, then her mom is screaming, "Get out of the house , Ruby! Get out of the house!" thats when she wakes up. when she is awake she walks to the place where devon had died. she looked at it for awhile, it was a tree, there was things that where there to remember him by also. There was one photograph of him as a small child and he looked so happy. Ruby started crying for the first time since her mom died. Her dad pulls up and for once Ruby actually feels like telling him everything and hugging him but an earthquake starts, it lasted 5 seconds. when she gets home she finds her huge bookshelf has crushed her bed. No wonder her "mom" was telling her to get out.
