Día de los muertos (Day of the Dead) / All Soul's Day
Mexican, Latin American, and Mexican American families celebrate traditions that unite ancient Aztec and Catholic customs. On this day, the spirits of the deceased are welcomed back with elaborate preparations and decorations. Graves are cleaned and festooned. Special Pan de muerto (Bread of the dead) is baked and enjoyed. Favorite foods, candles, marigold flowers, incense, and tissue paper decorations are important elements in this holiday. Parades are common. Skulls and skeletons are brightly colored for this happy and joyous occasion.
