Second Language
Grade 6
Students in the Gardner Dickinson Middle School Second Language Program learn to communicate effectively in another language. Learning a second language is our students’ connection to communities and cultures all over the world. Students begin to explore Spanish and develop basic communication skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will be able to comprehend simple statements and questions and usually will comprehend the main idea of extended but simple messages and conversations. This course is offered every other day for the entire academic year.
In 6th grade we concentrate on the Spanish basics and Personal Identification.
Grade 7
Students in the Gardner Dickinson Middle School Second Language Program learn to communicate effectively in another language. Topics that are covered in 7th Spanish are:
· Personal Identification
· Education
· Meal Taking/Food and Drink
· Shopping
· Health and Welfare
· Physical Environment
· Leisure
This course is offered as an accelerated course
· Maintain an overall average grade of 65% or better over 4 marking periods in both 7th and 8th grade.
· Must earn a grade of 65% or better on the final exams in both 7th and 8th grades.

Grade 8
Students in the Gardner Dickinson Middle School Second Language Program learn to become proficient in Spanish. The purpose of second language study in the middle school is the negotiation of meaning. Students are given opportunities to simulate real life situations and to use language that will accomplish a real communicative purpose such as:
· Socializing
· Providing and obtaining information
· Expressing personal feelings and opinions
· Getting others to adopt a course of action
Topics that are covered in 8th Spanish are:
· Family Life
· House and Home
· Community and Neighborhood
· Earning a Living
· Public Services
· Travel
This course is offered as an accelerated course
