First Grade Curriculum

Curricula
Mathematics: We use Everyday Mathematics. Children are taught arithmetic operations, concepts of number, time, money, measurement, and problem solving. In addition we will play math games aimed at teaching math concepts. Whenever possible the children are asked to apply their math knowledge to real life situations as they arise throughout the day.
Reading:
Reading instruction is aimed at developing comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary. We are using the structure of "The Daily Five" to help teach independence and help students engage in the reading process. All children will be taught to use phonics as a reading tool. Children will use materials produced by Rigby, Wilson, Fountas & Pinnell and authors of children's literature (both fiction and non-fiction). The emphasis, of course, is on reading for comprehension and enjoyment.
Writing: The children write everyday. We use a program out of the University of New Hampshire called "Picture Writing" to help us develop descriptive language, setting, and vocabulary.  We use the Lucy Calkins "Units of Study" to help us write using standard conventions and write non-fiction reports as well as poetry.
Science: We use the science program devised by Foss. Some of the units we will study are: plants and seeds, and rocks.  Children's interests can lead us to other areas of study.  In the past we have studied dinosaurs, chicks, recycling, air, and paper. Hands-on experiences and the observation of phenomena will be the mainstay of the science program.
Social Studies: The first grade curriculum focuses on the family. We will also study beginning map skills. Current events are always woven into lessons when appropriate.
