What is a speech/language pathologist?

A speech-language pathologist  (SLP) is a  professional who has been educated to assess speech and language development and to treat speech and language disorders.   (SLP's are sometimes informally referred to as speech therapists). Speech-language pathologists can also help people with swallowing disorders.

A person with the title SLP-CCC has earned the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) after they have earned a master’s degree, successfully completed the required clinical experiences, and passed a national exam.   In addition, New York State requires school based SLP's to be certified to teach in the school system and to maintain a New York State license.
