2012-2013 High School Profile

Located five miles south of Ithaca, NY (home of Cornell University and Ithaca College), Newfield is a small town of approximately 4900 residents. Many people who reside in Newfield work in the nearby communities of Ithaca, Elmira or Binghamton, while enjoying the beautiful scenery and rolling hills of Newfield.

School

The Newfield Central School District consists of two buildings with three separate schools on one campus. The Elementary School houses grades Pre K – 5 with a total enrollment of approximately 450 students a year. The Middle School, which encompasses 175 students in grades 6 – 8, is an extension of the High School building. Newfield High School is a comprehensive four-year public school serving approximately 250 students in grades 9 – 12. The average graduating class has 70 students each year. Newfield Central School District is accredited by the New York State Board of Regents.

Curriculum

The academic program offers a variety of courses to meet the individual needs of its students. In addition to their requirements for graduation, students may take elective courses in art, choral and instrumental music, foreign language, computer technology, independent living and vocational instruction. 8

Many students in grades 11 and 12 participate in the Concurrent Enrollment Program through Tompkins-Cortland Community College. Students who demonstrate mastery on New York State Regents exams can opt to participate in concurrent enrollment college courses taught by high school instructors in the areas of Business Law, United States History, Community First Aid, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Statistics, Business Math, Drafting, English Composition, English Literature and Biology. Students also have the opportunity to earn college credit directly through Tompkins Cortland Community College’s CollegeNow program (http://www.tc3.edu/collegenow/) .

8th grade students who demonstrate mastery on New York State Assessments will have the opportunity for accelerated Math and Foreign Language credits. http://www.newfieldschools.org/hssubjects.htm

For purposes of transfer students, NCAA, and any other institutions that use a letter grading system the conversion chart below will be used.

GPA and Ranking

GPA is computed by averaging student percentage scores by the number of credits attempted. All courses, whether passed or failed, are recorded on the transcript and used in the calculation of a student’s GPA.

Class Rank is calculated at the end of each semester using student GPA.
