NEWFIELD CHORUS DAILY GRADING SCALE

Every day you will be trying to earn 20 points based on the following. The week will count as 100 points.

You will be trying to earn 4 points in each category. If you are wondering how you are doing you may come and ask me at any time. This program will help to create a better environment in our chorus rehearsals. If you have lost ALL points for the day you will be asked to sit down and not participate for the rest of class. If you are asked to not participate you will earn a zero for the day. Please look at the following grading rubric to see how to earn the most points for your daily participation grade. If you are sick you MUST take notes and give them to me at the end of class to get a participation grade based on the quality.

High School Chorus Syllabus
School Year: 2009-2010
Welcome Back to Newfield HS Chorus!!

It is very exciting to welcome you back for an exciting year of music making! There are many exciting new projects for the coming year as well as new music which I think you are going to really enjoy! Working together we are going to have a most fabulous school year together!

Materials that you will need for class:
Binder and Pencils

Here are the classroom rules that I would like to follow in choir. If we follow these rules it will only lead to more success for the group.

1)      Have great respect for each other, myself, other faculty and staff, and administrators. This includes not talking when I am working with sections. Minimal talking is understandable but if you are inconsiderate you will begin to lose participation points.

2)      You must be on the risers with your music ready to go at the start of class. You must be on time. 3 unexcused tardies will equal a write-up.

3)      Please NO GUM.

4)      No beverages in the classroom with the exception of water. If you bring water to class it MUST be in a closed container. Those folks who must eat lunch during chorus MUST eat lunch OUT IN THE HALL!

5)      I will dismiss you from class and will always give you time to put your materials away.

6)      Always bring a pencil and your binder with your music.

7)      Always hand-in assignments on the day that they are due. Each day that an assignment is late; I will deduct 5 points from your grade.

8)      Come to class with an open attitude!

 GRADING

Quizzes, Tests, and Homework:

There will be one quiz given in voice lessons at the end of each marking period covering information that we discuss in class about the music as well as what we do in voice lessons.

There will be a midterm and a final given that will involve performance and written aspects.

We will have journal writing within class and sometimes as homework to reflect and draw connections within the music we are discussing.

You will be expected to know your parts in the music. If you wish for additional assistance for practicing you should let me know and I will make you a CD of your part in the music we are studying. Please keep me posted on how you are doing.

Voice Lessons

All students who are in chorus will need to attend their voice lessons. The voice lesson schedule will be on a rotation where you are pulled out of your classes to work on the art and technique of singing. It will be understood that if you have a science lab, test, quiz, or project/presentation that you can’t miss, you should NOT attend your voice lesson and stay in your class. You are given one lesson that you may miss each marking period. It is important that you let me know why you missed your lesson and you will be responsible for making up the lesson time. There will be make-up lessons set up into the lesson rotation. I have created a form to use this year which will assist us in how many excused and unexcused lessons misses you have. Please see attached form. These will be available in my office.

During voice lessons we will be discussing vocal technique, music theory, aural skills, vocal repertoire, and music history.
