Course Description:
This course develops the basics of a calculus curriculum. The topics taught will be limits, differentiation, applications of differentiation, integration, and applications of integration. These are chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 in our text. This course is offered as ACE credit and 4 college credits can be earned through the successful completion of this course.

Course Goals
The goals of Calculus are for the students to be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the definitions of limit, continuity, derivative and the definite integral.
  • Determine limits of functions algebraically, numerically and graphically.
  • Determine the derivatives of algebraic and trigonometric functions involving sums, differences, quotients, and compositions.
  • Solve application problems involving the derivative.
  • Determine indefinite and definite integrals of basic algebraic and trigonometric functions.
  • Solve application problems involving the definite integral.
  • Use a Computer Algebra System (CAS) to solve application problems involving limits, derivatives, and integrals.
  • Increase critical thinking skills.
  • Develop study habits and a personal responsibility for learning.

Course Expectations:
I expect you to come to class prepared everyday with your notebook, textbook, calculator, and completed homework. A positive attitude is needed for everyone to succeed in this course. If you have a question or are experiencing difficulty with some material, please ask questions in class or find the time to meet one on one.

Course Grade Breakdown:
Homework:       10%
Labs:                10%
Tests:               35%
Quizzes:           25%
Final Exam:       20%

Class participation is required, the more that you are involved in the learning process, the easier it will be to get to the mastery level.

Homework: Homework will be assigned on a daily basis. You are expected to complete all problems neatly and to the best of your ability. There will be assignments that are asked to be turned in and others that we will go over in class.

Labs: We will be doing many different labs using the Maple Program on the computers. Each lab is required to have a written lab report that follows all guidelines given to you. These labs are very important, and therefore points will be deducted on all late reports.

Tests: Each chapter will have a test, as well as chapter P. This allows for six tests throughout the year. We will review the day before each chapter test.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be given frequently to check our understanding of the material. These quizzes may or may not be announced. Always be prepared!

Final Exam: At the end of the course there will be an all-encompassing final exam. Anything from chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 can be on this exam. We will do a full review before this exam is given.

Retakes: If you would like to retake any quiz, you must set up an appointment with me in which we will go over the original test or quiz and then you may retest for a higher score. At the end of every 10 weeks all grades are final!

Absences: If you are absent for a test or quiz, you will be expected to make it up within 2 days. The homework assignment that you missed the day of the absence is expected to be fully made up and turned in to me.

Academic Dishonesty:  It is expected that while participating in this course, all students will adhere to the Code of Student Conduct and the Academic Honesty policy as detailed in the Student Handbook. Plagiarism and other forms of cheating will not be tolerated in any form and will be punished by the instructor and the college as appropriate. Penalties for violating Academic Honesty may include a reduction in grade, an “F” for the course or expulsion from the college.
