Welcome to 7th/8th grade!

You are going to find that 7th/8th grade are challenging and exciting years. It is crucial that all students keep up with the pace of the work and take their academics seriously. There have been significant changes in our curriculums and students will find the material to be highly engaging.

Required Supplies:
·         Pens/Pencils
·         Highlighters
·         Binder
·         One pocket folder
·         College Ruled Paper
Novels:
We will be working with novels throughout the year. Students will be assigned a novel and given a Ziploc bag to store the book. Students are responsible for their books. They MUST be brought to class every day and they will be returned in their original condition. If students lose or damage the books they will be responsible for the replacement price of the book.

Homework:
Students will be given periodic homework assignments. They will be expected to be turned in on time.
  • Single day absences ~ If a student is absent from school, they are given three days for every day absent to make up homework.

Long term absences ~ there are sometimes extenuating circumstances. These should be discussed between the parent and teacher, the school nurse and if necessary the principal. Parents should first talk to the teacher about arranging to pick up work. Parents should also place a phone call to the nurse in absences longer than a couple of days. In exceptional cases, a tutor can be assigned in situations of long term care needs. The principal arranges tutors.

  • A student who turns in a homework assignment one day late will only receive a maximum of 50% of the full credit for the assignment. If it is two or more days late, it will be graded for assessment, but receive no credit.

  • Writing assignments and projects are given in advance and will lose 50% if they are not in on time.  Students need to speak to me prior to the due date if there is a situation that prevents them from having their assignment in on time.

Discipline:
We have a significant amount of material to cover this year. Disruptions and disciplinary problems will be addressed quickly. Many of the lessons that will be taught this year contain discussion components. It is crucial that students follow directions and are active participants. If a student is disrupting the learning of other students they will be removed from the room.
General Discipline Policy:
1)       One warning is given for the first disruption, distraction or problem.
2)      Second disruption results in a student being moved to a separated desk.
3)      Any subsequent disruptions will result in lunch detention or being sent out of the room.

Class participation:
Participation and discussion are very large components of the lessons that will be taught this year. Due to this, students will receive a daily class participation grade. They will receive full credit for the day if they come prepared, are punctual, follow directions, actively participate, work well with others, remain on task and are cooperative. Class participation will be a significant portion of their overall grade.
After School Help:
I will be available every Thursday for after school help. Students must be in my room by 3:05. Help will run until 4pm. If students need additional time they must speak to me in at least one day in advance to ensure that I am available.
