For the week of Sept. 10th-
  • Lab for this week involves the questions (6) on page 26 of your text and also the pink lab safety and techniques hand out. Bubbles and glass bending during the second lab period of the week.
  • Monday-  Chapter 1 worksheets and blue questions were collected for points.
  • After the "pre class" assessment, we will be taking notes from chapter 3 on Significant Figures....know it, learn it and love it as we will use them all year long!
  •  Chapter 3 work sheets and blue questions are coming....don't be afraid to get a head start!
Week of Sept. 17th-
  • This weeks lab included the check scenerio with the 3x5 measurements and pre 1981 pennies vs. post 1981 pennies.
  • Monday- We went over questions to our first lab and then I collected them. Also, we finished the chapter 3 worksheet questions in class and they were collected as well.
  • Tuesday- Started going over chapter 3 blue questions. Carried over to Wednesday and then they were collected
  • Thursday- Chapter 3 small quiz followed by notes on Atomic structure from chapter 4. Passed out worksheets for chapter 4.
  • Friday- Make up quiz available on your own time.
  • Chapter 4 blue questions coming early next week.
Week of Sept. 24th


  • This weeks lab is called Candium- calculate the average "atomic" mass of the three different kinds of candy in your sample of Candium. 
  • Monday- Collected last week's lab-Write-up first, followed by check scenario, smale scale lab pages on 3x5 cards and pre/post 1982 pennies, Atomic subparticles ws. Next, we took questions on the chapter 4 worksheets.
  • Tuesday- Finished worksheet questions and collected them.  Started chapter 4 blue questions in class. Did several examples of average atomic mass/isotope problems.
  • Wednesday- took more blue questions in class.  Collected blue questions for grade. Started notes on chapter 5
Week of October 1st
  • This week's lab we started later in the week and will continue next week. It was on the flame test using the Bunsen burner.
  • Monday- Conference day.
  • Tuesday, Wednesday and part of Thursday- Chapter 5 notes on electron configurations, Hund's, Aufbau and Pauli rules dictate how orbitals are filled with electrons.  Used the speed of light formula that relates wavelength and frequency inversely.
  • Thursday and Friday- Went over chapter 5 worksheets and blue questions
Week of October 8th
  • This week's lab will be a continuation of the flame lab and we will build and calibrate our own spectrometer from a cereal box.
  • Monday- Quiz on chapter 5 notes, worksheets and blue questions
  • Tuesday- Go over quiz
  • Wednesday- Chapter six and periodic table notes
Week of 10-15
  • Lab suppliment of spectrum from gas tubes.  Remember that these spectra could be used to help identify unknown substances by correlation of spectral lines.  Now write up Flame test, Spectrometer and gas tubes into one lab report (3x).
  • Monday-chapter six worksheets questions
  • Tuesday and Wednesday-blue questions (end of marking period, PSAT test)
  • Thursday-College Day
  • Friday-quiz or mustard day (ketchup)

Week of 10-22
  • This weeks lab is on the Alien Periodic Table.  Includes the table, questions that go with it and the chapter 6 practice problems for sections 1,2 and 3.
  • Monday- Chapter 6 blue questions gone over in class, then collected.
  • Tuesday- Quiz on chapter 6, then start chapter 7 notes.
  • Wednesday and Thursday-Continue chapter 7 notes.
  • Friday- take worksheet questions from chapter 7.
Week of 10-29
  • This weeks lab is on Chemical Formulas- this lab will partially spill over to next week, due to Sandy costing us a day.
  • Monday-Continued with the notes for chapter 7and took questions on chapter 7 worksheets.
  • Tuesday-Sandy
  • Wednesday-Finished and collected chapter 7 worksheet questions, moved to chapter 7 blue questions-review name procedures for ionic compounds.
  • Thursday- more blue questions. Passed out chapter 7 practice problems.
  • Friday- more blue questions, look at Practice Problems, Quiz? Tied chapter 9 sections 1 and 2 to chapter 7, sections 3-5 to chapter 8.
Week of 11-5
  • This weeks lab is a continuation of Chemical Formulas.  Use lab data to verify the chemical formula determined using the reference table.
  • Monday-Go over questions missed on chapter 7 quiz. Start covalent notes.
  • Tuesday- Got worksheets for chapter 9 sections 1&2 and all of chapter 8.
  • Wednesday- Notes on Polar and non-polar atoms.
  • Thursday-VSEPR theory notes and questions from chapter 8 ws.
  • Early dismissal day, morning class to work on lab/worksheets.
Week of 11-12
  • This weeks lab was the covalent bonding and rubber band lab.
  • Monday-no school for Veteran's Day
  • Tuesday through Thursday notes from chapter 9 sections 3-5 on naming binary molecular compounds and acids and bases.
  • Handed out chapter 9 section 3-5 worksheets and also have chapter 9 blue questions to do.
Week of 11-19 and 11-20
  • Monday- field trip to Museum of the Earth, so work on getting lab written up and chapter nine worksheets and blue questions.
  • Happy Turkey time-enjoy good food, family and football!
Week of 11/26-11/30
  • This week's lab involves calculating the number of moles of air in the classroom.
  • Monday we spent time on answering questions to Chapter 9 worksheets and blue questions.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday- Started notes from chapter 10 on Moles....Moles to atoms...moles to mass and mole to volume conversions.  Avagodro's number!!! 22.4 liters and GFM.
  • Wednesday (also) ...Quiz on writing formulas from names and vice versa.  Can't do molecular masses (GFM) if we can't determine the correct formula.
  • Thursday- Did examples of Mole conversions from chapter 10 worksheets and lab handouts...lots of problems. Also went over naming quiz.
  • Last day of second marking period.
Week of 12/3-12/7
  • This week's lab involved first catching up, followed by the double-sided (front here, back here) balancing chemical equations worksheet.
  • Monday- Questions from the Moles of air in the classroom lab followed by chapter 10 worksheet questions.
  • Tuesday- Notes on Percent Composition and Empirical Formulas.
  • Wednesday and Thursday- I did whatever chapter 10 Blue questions you asked me to do on the board.
  • Also Thursday- we started some notes on the Law of Conservation of Mass and the use of coeffiecents to balance chemical equations.
  • Friday- Quiz on chapter 10, which can be found here.  Answers to quiz are here (front,back).
Week of 12/11-12/14
  • This week's lab involved calculating whether or not Oreo DoubleStuffed cookies are really double stuffed! What conclude you?
  • Notes on Types of Chemical rxns-Synthesis, Decomposition, Single Replacement, Double Replacement, Combustion and Redox.
  • We went back and spent some more time on fundamentals of chemistry including valence electrons, the periodic table, writing chemical formulas, ionic vs covalent compounds, etc.

Week of 12/18-12/21
  • No new lab this week.  Let's get all the back stuff caught up!
  • Still working on making sure everyone was up to speed on the chemical formulas/chemical equations writing and balancing.  Make up quiz for chapter 10 must be taken by close of business on Wednesday.  The Adminission ticket packet for the make-up (mixed mole problem set) is also worth 50 points.
