Meet the Librarian

My name is Mrs. Gorman and I am the librarian at Gardner Road and Center Street Schools in Horseheads, NY.  I began my teaching career after graduating from Penn State University where I received my Bachelors degree in Elementary Education.  While I was at Penn State, I was a proud member of the Marching Blue Band where I played the French horn/mellophone.  I taught 3rd grade at Ridge Road School for 15 years.  During that time I earned a Masters degree in Reading & Literacy from Elmira College and most recently, another Masters degree in School Library and Information Technology from Mansfield University.  This is my second year as a librarian.

Obviously, reading and books are a huge part of my life.  When I'm not reading, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two children.  My husband is a second grade teacher, in Athens, PA, where we reside.  My son is 6 and my daughter is 8.  In my spare time, I enjoy art, music, cooking...really any chance to be creative.  I especially love planning get togethers with my family and friends and visiting the beach.

Although I love so many books, there are certain books that have had great significance to me over the years.  I first read The Bridge to Terabithia  by Katherine Patterson as a 4th grader and it was the first book that ever made me cry.  In 8th grade, my English teacher, Mr. Harrison, read aloud to us from The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.  I hadn't been read aloud to since back in elementary school.  I can still hear Mr. Harrison's gravely voice with his Brooklyn accent.  I could listen to him read for hours.  I Love You the Purplest by Barbara M. Joosse is another significant story in my life because I often read it to my children when they were smaller.

It is an absolute joy to share my love of reading with my students!  I hope that I might light a fire for books in their hearts as well!
