Grading Policy
Your grades for Science and ELA will include homework assignments, quizzes, tests, effort, and class participation. Class participation means actively listening, speaking during class discussions, and helping others in your class to succeed. Extra credit assignments will also be given throughout the year; make sure to take advantage of those opportunities!

Homework:
Homework assignments will be given a “check plus”, “check”, or “check minus” based on effort and quality.
  • A + means you showed great effort and thoroughly completed the entire assignment. Putting forth great effort means that you have answered in neat handwriting, used complete sentences where applicable, and took time to check your work for correctness. A + is equivalent to the number grade of 100%.
  • A means you put forth some effort, but the assignment was not thoroughly completed, your handwriting was illegible, or you did not follow all of the directions given. A is equivalent to the number grade of 80%.
  • A - means that you displayed very little effort in completing the assignment. Displaying little effort means the assignment was not fully completed, you followed few or no directions, or your handwriting was unable to be read. A - is equivalent to the number grade of 60%.

Any homework assignments handed in after the due date will receive a penalty. Assignments that are one day late will automatically receive no higher than a (80%). Assignments that are two days late will receive no higher than a check minus - (60%). After two days, you must still turn in the assignment; however, you will receive a zero.

Quizzes:
Quizzes will be given frequently throughout each marking period to assess your knowledge. You will always know in advance when a quiz will be given, and you will receive a study guide to help you study. You will be able to make corrections on quizzes to improve your grade. Corrections will be optional, but I suggest that you always make them! When you make corrections, your original grade will be averaged with your correction grade. For example, if you receive a 60% on a quiz, make corrections and receive a 100%, the average of the two scores is an 80%. The 80% would become your new quiz grade.

Tests:
Throughout each marking period, several tests will also be given.  As with a quiz, you will always know in advance when a test will be given, and you will receive a study guide for each test to help you study. Tests cannot be corrected for a new grade.

Rubrics:
Certain assignments, especially projects, will be scored using a rubric. The rubric grade will be converted into a % grade.
