Homework Policy

Social Studies Homework Policy

1. Homework will be assigned on average 3 times a week.

2. Late homework will not receive any credit; however, students can complete an outline of the section for half credit.

3. Homework is considered on time only if it is in the classroom the day that it is due. Homework that is done but left at home or in your locker is considered late.

4. If a student is legally absent from school they have one extra day to complete the assignment. Students who are in school but miss class for a lesson, sporting event or other activity are still required to complete the assignment on time. If a student turns in an assignment after the due date because of a legal absence they must write ABSENT on the assignment.

5. Students are expected to complete all homework assignments on their own. Students who copy homework from each other are in violation of the Horseheads Middle School Plagiarism policy and all parties involved will receive a conduct report.

6. Students can complete extra credit assignments only if all homework assignments are completed.

Homework is a necessary part of the learning process. If it is continuously not done or late it will affect your grade!

Grading

Grades will be based on a point system as follows:

Formative (during the unit)
(Classwork, homework, quizzes)
40%
Summative (end of the unit):
(projects & tests)
60%

Moodle Homework Guidelines:

Moodle is an online Learning Managment System (LMS) students use complete homework assignments, tests, quizzes and have access to a variety of other educational materials.
  1. At the beginning of each month students will be given a homework and assessment calendar. Homework assignments may be completed any day before the assignment DUE date.
  1. Each student has three chances on each homework assignment in Moodle.
  1. Students MUST get a 7 (or 70%) or better to get credit for an assignment. A score that is less than a 7 will be considered not done.
  1. If students don’t get a 7 (or 70%) or better in three tries or less an outline must be completed for that section before the assignment due date.
  1. If an assignment is not complete by the due date students MUST complete an OUTLINE for half credit. Outlines must include ALL red & blue headings for that section. There should be a minimum of three facts for each red and blue heading.
  1. If a student is absent they have 1 extra day to complete an outline for full credit.
  1. If there are computer or internet problems and this prevents a student from completing a Moodle assignment the following must occur:
a.  Complete an outline of that section and turn in by the due date for full credit
b.  A signed note from a parent explaining the problem (an email is also acceptable from the parents email account)

Note:  All students at Horseheads Middle School have a 20 minute lunch/study hall and a 30 minute 10th period study hall in addition to other traditional study halls. Most Moodle assignments should only take 10-15 minutes to complete.
