Physical science is the study of matter and
energy. During the year we will learn about basic chemical
and physical properties of matter. We will study the interactions
of matter and energy. We will also examine the role of science in
daily life through consumer investigations and the science fair.
We also learn about heat, light, sound, electricity
and magnetism while examining their role in everyday life.
Instruction occurs in a variety of modes.
Laboratory activities are presented to reinforce course work. The
lab format is a small group activity during which the groups must work
cooperatively. The written part of the lab is done
individually and must be completed outside of class. A portion of the
course material will be presented in a lecture, note taking
format. Other presentation modes include discussion,
demonstration, question and answer and guided practice experiences.
Homework is an important part of this course.
Homework will often consist of reading assignments in the textbook, a
handout the reinforces the topic introduced in class or a written
assignment. Completing homework on time will result in a
higher homework grade, but more importantly it will positively impact
quiz and test grades. Homework will be checked for completion and
reviewed at the beginning of class.
Assignments not complete
at the beginning of class will receive a zero. If the assignment
is completed by the end of the period it will receive half
credit. A quarterly homework grade will be given based on the
percent of assignments completed on time.
Quizzes will occur regularly when necessary.
Tests occur at regular intervals and average every four weeks.
Grades are averaged at the end of the marking
period. Quarterly averages are based on total points
earned. The total number of points a student earned divided by
the total points possible would equal the student s
grade.
All students are
required to have a marble composition book for lab, writing and
study skills activities. This year the composition book will be
used for lab and writing activities.
Tenth
period is an extra help, academic assistance period. Tenth
period attendance will be by teacher request and also by student or
parent request. Please encourage your child to attend tenth
period whenever he/she is asked or when she/he wants extra help.
