All About Third Grade

Goals For Third Grade

Students will work on the following skills in all subject areas; listening, speaking, problem solving, critical thinking, study skills and participation.

 

Reading

We have a wonderful new reading series this year. Our new books are loaded with great stories (all of which may be found in local book stories, too). We will be working on building reading fluency, decoding skills, comprehension skills, vocabulary and more.

 

Language Arts

Students will work on numerous writing projects throughout the school year. These will include; friendly letters, picture prompts, writing fictional stories, descriptive stories, peer interviews, report writing, note taking and more. The students will also work on capitalization, punctuation, nouns, verbs, adjectives and more. We will be working on editing skills, too.

 

Spelling

Students will be working in a program called Month By Month Phonics. Each week the students will be resposible for learning several Word Wall WOrds. They will also work on spelling patterns (rhymes) to help them become even better spellers. Each Friday your child will have a spelling test on the Word Wall Words as well as spelling patterns.

 

Handwriting

Students will be reviewing print as well as lower case cursive letters. They will receive instruction in upper case cursive letters.

 

Science

Students will work on the following units this year: role of a scientsist, buoyancy, solar system, electricity, magnets and butterflies & more.

 

Social Studies

The students will learn about different kinds of communities as well as mapping skills. Units during the third grade year include; Maps & Globes, Plymouth, Massachusetts, London, England, Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Honolulu, Hawaii.

 

Math

Students will work on the following skills this year; addition, subrtraction, graphing, place value, time,  money, measurement, multiplication, division and solving word problems.

 

Specials

During the school year the students will be able to take part in many special projects. These include corresponding with pen pals, a Friday Fun Activity session which will usually center around one of our units of study, art projects, guest speakers and more!
