Homework - It's a Family Thing

Tips from teachers to help make homework work for your child.

Homework is  given to practice skills and review what’s been learned.

Pick a regular time and a quiet, well-lit place for homework.

Turn off the television, radio, and cell phone.

Make sure your child has the right supplies nearby.

Pencils, markers, paper, and a dictionary will help keep your child organized.

Keep track of your child's assignments and help your child stay organized by checking backpacks, take-home folders, and assignment pads.

Encourage independent work but be there to help with tough problems.

Check it. You don't have to grade their work, but if you are interested they will stay interested.

Set a good example. Let your kids catch you reading and writing. Make it family "homework" time.

Get to know your child's teachers. Go to parent-teacher conferences, call or e-mail teachers with questions.

Attend school activities and support your child's school. Involved parents make better schools.

Cheer your child on. Applaud your child for successfully completing homework. Nothing builds success like praise from parents.
