All About 3rd Grade

Goals For Third Graders

Students will work on the following skills in all subject areas: listening, speaking, problem solving, critical thinking, study skills and participation.

  • You have probably been hearing about the Common Core.

What does Common Core mean?

Our children will face challenges in their careers and in higher education unlike those faced by our generations.
Educators around the country are working to adapt instruction to meet the changing needs of our students. The new “Common Core” standards have been designed to do just that. But what is the Common Core and what does it mean to parents?
Here are two documents that clearly and simply explain the Common Core and how you can support your children in their education.

  1. Parent Guide for ELA
  2. Parent Guide for Math

v      READING
This year in third grade (2013 -2014) will be a transition year.  We will be moving from the Houghton-Mifflin reading series to the new Common Core Modules.  The modules are designed to be more rigorous and to integrate language skills with the content area knowledge of social studies and science topics.  During this transition year, we will be drawing from both resources for our instruction.

As always, we will work on building reading fluency and stamina, growing vocabulary, refining decoding skills, and deepening comprehension all year long.

v      LANGUAGE ARTS
The students will work on numerous writing projects throughout the year.  These will include: friendly letters, picture prompts, listening prompts, fictional stories, descriptive stories, peer interviews, report writing, note taking and more.  The students will also work on capitalization, punctuation, nouns, verbs, adjectives and more.

v      SPELLING
The students will be working in a program Month-by-Month Phonics.  Each week the students will be responsible for learning several "Word Wall" words (words that are highly used when reading or writing).  They will also work on spelling patterns to help them become better spellers.  Each Friday the students will take a spelling test on the spelling patterns and Word Wall words.

v      HANDWRITING
The students will be reviewing print as well as lower case cursive letters.  They will also receive instruction in upper case cursive letters.

v      SCIENCE
The students will work on the following units during the school year:  Role of a scientist (& scientific method), buoyancy, solar system, electricity, magnetism and butterflies & moths.

v      SOCIAL STUDIES
The students will learn about different kinds of communities as well as mapping skills.  Units during the third grade year include: Maps & Globes, Plymouth, Massachusetts, London, England, Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Honolulu, Hawaii.
