Suggestions for parents

The  best thing you can do for your child is to spend time reading with them everyday.  Here are some suggestions:

1.  If you child is not yet a reader, read to them.  Have the child follow along as you read, using their finger to point to the words.  At the end of the lines of text, they can practice sweeping down to the next line.  Ask them to make predictions of what might happen next.

2.  If your child is a beginning reader, have them read the words they know, you read the other words.  As they learn more words, they will be reading more and more of the text.

3.  If your child is reading independently, take a few minutes and talk to them about what they have read.  They will read more carefully if they know you are going to be talking about it with them.

4.  With all students, some ideas to discuss might include:  making predictions; talking about the characters and settings; events from the beginning, middle and end; what they liked or didn't like about the story.  Always try to follow up with a "why" question.  This will encourage the student to provide reasons for their thinking, a valuable learning skill.
