What's New @ the Library?

Spring 2017 Library News

New items continue to be added monthly!  So far this school year, we have added 578 new titles including books, magazines, eBooks, and DVDs.  Browse all of our new titles in OPALS!

On February 28th, Richie Phillips of WGNY fame came to Gardner Dickinson to work with K-5 students to create a school theme song based on diversity and tolerance. We're hoping to post this song to our web site soon!

This year we had an amazing PARP 2017 program!  This year's theme was One School, One Book, and grades K-8 all read texts about Malalal Yousafzai, Pakistani educational rights activist.  We celebrated both reading and Malala all March through a variety of programs and activities including an adult community-wide Book Club which culminated in a showing of the movie, He Named Me Malala with a panel discussion lead by Pakistani natives, Kainat Akhart and Yagana Hafed on March 21.  We also hosted local author and educator, Coleen Paratore, on March 21st to lead Malala inspired writer's workshops for grades 4-6.  All students K-6 created a product of their learning about Malala which was displayed in a learning exhibit at the end of March.  And finally, we had local author, Meryl Day, back to read at our culminating Book Fair event on March 22! It was a busy month!

Next we'll be hosting children's author and illustrator, Dan Miyares, on May 10th!  His newest title, The Neighbor Kid, is being released the day before on May 9th.  Grades K-3 along with our guests from Little Red will spend the morning with Dan.  Please visit his
web site for more info, and if you'd like your child to have a book signed, please purchase one in advance at your preferred local retailer!

Also, please visit our OPALS Library News page for stories on what your children are doing in Library class this Winter!  Everyone is engaged in exploring new authors, new resources, and new tools!!

Permission slips for our Nooks (e-readers) are being sent home with 4th grade families.  If you have submitted a slip for your child last year, you will not have to submit a new form each year.  We will keep signed forms on file.  They are also available on our school web site or here.

As always, parent volunteers are needed and most welcome to help out in the Library.  If you have any time in your schedule and you would be interested in coming in to the library, please contact me at lfecura@wynantskillufsd.org.

Finally, if you have any questions or comments about anything, including access to our extensive ebook collection, just drop me a line.  I'm always glad to hear from you.

Happy reading,

~ Ms. Fecura
