Exploring Careers

Guidance counselors work with students in their sophomore year on beginning to explore career ideas. They guide students through an exploration process of thinking about the future, their interests and abilities, what type of career they might be interested in, and what training and education they might need to pursue for that career. They then provide them with resources and other opportunities to further explore careers.

What is SHADOWING?

A shadowing enables you to spend part of a day with an adult in a career you are interested in at that person's worksite. You will learn about the job responsibilities, the format of a typical day, the salary range, and the work environment. You must provide your own transportation to the experience. We encourage you to take advantage of this special opportunity!

What is a career panel?

These are informational meetings arranged around a particular career field. There is a panel discussion by adults followed by student question time. This is a larger group activity. It can help provide awareness to a field. Watch for flyers…panels this year will be on education, medicine, engineering, law enforcement, sports and human service careers. You must have transportation. Sign up in Guidance - space is limited, and seniors have priority.

How do I arrange a Shadowing?

  1. Juniors and seniors sign up in the Guidance Office or email (dlynch@gstboces.org) to meet with Mrs. Lynch on a Tuesday or Wednesday during the activity periods.
  2. Meet with Mrs. Lynch to discuss your shadowing interest.
  3. When your shadowing has been arranged (usually 2-3 weeks), Mrs. Lynch will notify you and give you a packet of information including:
    • Confirmation letter with details
    • Directions and special instructions
    • Parent permission slip
    • Student evaluation to be returned to Mrs. Lynch
