Representation—having someone speak or act for others
Repeal—to take back or cancel a law
Quarter—providing shelter, a bed, and meals for someone
Boycott—to refuse to buy or use
Minutemen—volunteer soldiers of the American colonies who could be ready to fight against the British in a
minute’s time.
Declaration of Independence—a letter that said the American colonies were free from British rule.
Constitution—the laws and plan of government of the United States of America
Estates General—an assembly of three classes of French people between the 1300’s and 1700’s.
National Assembly—a government body of French merchants and peasants that gathered together just before
the French Revolution.
Adjourn—to close a meeting.
Bastille—a royal prison in France
Reign of Terror—a period of the French Revolution during which many people were killed for not supporting
changes in France
Guillotine—an instrument used to kill a person by dropping a heavy blade on the person’s neck.
Peninsulares—people in the highest class in Latin America. They were born in Spain or Portugal.
Creoles---people who were born in Latin America but had European ancestors
Haciendas—large Latin American farms
Mestizos—Latin American people with European and Native American ancestors.
Mulattoes—people with European and African ancestors
Liberator—a person who frees a country or a group of people.
