School Counseling Services

What is a School Counselor?

School Counselors are New York State Certified to support students within the areas of academics, career exploration and social/emotional development.

Academics
  • Annually we update and maintain schedules and diploma credit checks for students in grades 9-12.
    • In 8th grade, we present graduation requirements and provide students with "Our Futures Guide."  This guide provides course descriptions for all classes offered at Waverly High School.
      • We also fill out a four year plan for each 8th grader, mapping out what their high school experience may look like based on their career interests.
    • In Grades 9-11, we meet with students in February/March individually to discuss academic progress, graduation requirements, diploma types, how to choose courses based on future career goals, mock schedules, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), PSATs, ASVAB, SAT and ACT.  Students in grade 11 will receive a Senior Packet including a senior year timeline, college search, application tips, sample resume, Career Developmen Council contact information and programming, information on requesting a transcript, guidance on signing up for the ACT and/or SAT, financial aid resources, employment resources and military contacts.
    • In grade 12, we meet with students during college application week in October.  Students will receive support with setting up job shadows, completing college applications and discussing employment and trade school opportunities.
  • We continuously meet with students, teachers and parents to talk about student progress.  This may be done individually with the student or may involve a parent/teacher meeting.  Our utmost goal is to help students be successful within the classroom.
Career Exploration
  •   Grade 9:
    • Choices 360
      • Students complete a career interest inventory on their student Choices 360 account.
  • Grade 10:
    • BOCES Road Show
      • Students learn about BOCES programs offered in 11th and 12th grade.
  • Grade 11:
    • Starting in September, students can sign up for the PSATs.  This exam serves as a practice exam for the SATs.  After completing the exam students receive a score sheet in December including their results, areas of strengths and weaknesses as well as a log in where they can receive additional practice.
    • College Field Trips: students can sign up to visit BCC& SUNY Binghamton during 2021-2022 and TC3 & SUNY Cortland during 2022-2023.
    • In December, Juniors are invited to a presentation from BOCES on their New Visions programs.
    • We highly encourage that all Juniors sign up for a job shadow with Mr. Alo, so they can get first hand exposure to the careers they are interested in.
  • Grade 12:  We work very closely with seniors and their parents to help them with college and employment exploration and decision making.
    • Mad City Money
      • Students work through a simulation where they learn to budget and manage money.
    • Mock Interviews
      • Students prepare resumes and meet with local employers to practice interview skills.  Each student has an individual interview and is given feedback.
 Social/Emotional Development

  • We provide individual, group, and crisis counseling as well as peer mediation based on student need.  We work closely with outside agencies to connect families with support.  Crisis and long term counseling is referred to these agencies (Suicidal Ideation, self-harm, Anxiety/Anger/Depression, Abuse).
    • On a daily basis, we work with students and parents regarding attendance, academics, behaviors and social/emotional concerns.
