Journeys is our new reading program. We will begin each week by introducing a list of vocabulary words, as well as spelling/phonics words. A fiction or nonfiction text will be read as a whole class that follows a theme and includes both types of words. During our first read, we will discuss the text on a basic level. On our second read we will analyze the text on a deeper level. Our guided reading books will connect to the same theme. Later in the week we will also study a second text as a whole class that connects to the theme.
New lessons will always start on a Monday and spelling tests will usually land on a Friday. Students will also be assessed on their response to reading, vocabulary and sometimes grammar during the week. Every five weeks we will complete a unit and have a unit test on all of the reading skills they have learned.
