One School One Book

In the 2016-17 school year, I helped to launch a new initiative at Ridge Road.
With the support of our PTO, we were able to purchase one copy,
for each and every student and staff member, of

The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney.

We kicked off the event with a school-wide assembly introducing the book
as well as a new school pet, Humphrey!

According to the developers of this program, Read to Them“the benefits of reading aloud are remarkable—studies have shown that reading to children helps them to listen better and longer, build bigger vocabularies, understand concepts better, feel positive about books, learning and more!  When an entire school reads the same book, the buzz and excitement around the book being read increases these benefits and there is the added joy of building community in the school family.”

Students and their families enjoyed reading together at home, we introduced trivia questions on our news program to correspond with the weekly chapter assignments, and students were also able to watch their teachers read the chapters aloud on our website as well.  The culminating event was a fun-filled night for students, families and staff where games were played, crafts were created, and snacks were enjoyed.

The love for all things Humphrey was so great,
I facilitated an after-school
Book Club
to read the second book in the series,
Friendship According to Humphrey!
Twenty Four Third Graders joined me for the fun!

To kick off the 2017-2018 school year,
I read the book Only One You by Linda Kranz
to all students during their Library special.

I have incorporated the messages in the story into our
Character Education program by presenting a new message
from the book as it applies to our character traits each month.

Cuurently, all students are working with
Art Teacher, Rich Hamula,
to paint unique rocks
to represent themselves in a
Ridge Road Rock Garden!
