Parent Letter
Dear Parents,
We strongly believe that children become better readers by having lots of opportunities to read. Reading is so much more than just sounding out words on the page. Good readers read for meaning. They learn to check themselves. All children who are learning how to read need many more experiences with books than can be provided during the school day. Thus, the importance of daily reading at home.
Reading homework will come home in your child’s reading folder. Your child should read the book(s) at least once before returning it the next day. These books will either be ones that we have already read together in a Guided Reading lesson or they will be ones your child has chosen from a basket of appropriately leveled books. Either way, they should be able to read the book in their folder without assistance. The more your child reads the better reader he or she will become!
Please support your child’s reading development by doing the following:

  1. Set aside time to listen to your child read.
  2. Praise your child for what he or she can do.
  3. Don’t pick words out of the story for your child to read. He or she should read complete sentences.
  4. Let your child fix his or her own mistakes without help from you.
  5. Talk about the story in a natural way. Don’t ask questions to test what he or she remembers about the story.
  6. Be sure that your child returns their books promptly the next day.

Parental involvement is an important part of your child’s reading development. Please make reading a priority!

Sincerely,

Reading Teachers
