Parent Tips to Promote Reading Development
Parent Tips to Promote Reading Development

*Establish time to read daily. Just like learning a sport, reading takes lots of practice. The more time spent reading and using reading skills, the more skilled a reader you will become. Give some thought to how much time is spent reading versus other activities like TV or computer games. The more a child reads, the better a reader they will become.

*Have a variety of reading materials available to your child.

*Visit libraries and join book clubs.

*Let your child see others in the house read regularly and talk about what you are reading.

*Let your child read independently. Good readers fix their own mistakes.

*One of the best ways for your child to improve their reading is for them to read lots of fairly easy material. They should not be reading material that is difficult for them.

*Read to your child and discuss story together as you read.

*Reading is making meaning from and connecting with the text! Reading is not sounding out the words perfectly. Have your child talk about and discuss what they are reading. They need to develop “thinking” skills while reading.
