Help your child make connections as you read

This helps your child build vocabulary and the ability to recognize words automatically.

*Point to each word as you read it out loud.

*Move your finger along under the words as you read.

*Point every so often to a group of words, then to the picture that goes with them.

*Pause once in a while when you are reading.  Ask your child to repeat a word that you've just read.  Have your child point to the word as he or she says it.

*Talk about a word that is new to your child.  Say the word and what it means.  Point to the word as you read it.

*Say the name of a word that is shown in the picture and have your child find the item in the picture.  For example, if you read "Sally threw the ball," ask your child to point to the ball.  Then show your child what the written word looks like.
