Senior High Physical Education

All Students have been given a Physical Education Course Outline and Syllabus.  This is to be signed and turned in as soon as possible.

The last marking period will offer Swimming make up for anyone who has all of the "fits" requirements met and chooses to swim, or for anyone who needs  to make up an "I", "S", or "F".

In the gym, the other choice is Frisbee for anyone who has all "fits" requirements or needs a "T".

Course Outline 
Students will participate coeducationally in a variety of individual, dual, and team sports and activities aligned with the New York State Learning Standards for Physical Education. 
                 
                  Standard 1 - Personal Health and Fitness
                  Standard 2 - A Safe and Healthy Environment
                  Standard 3 - Resource Management
 
Students in grades 9-12 will be participating in the F.I.T.S. program. The procedure for F.I.T.S. is outlined as follows:
 

  • Each student must earn a passing grade in all four categories: Fitness, Individual, Team, and Swimming throughout each year of high school to earn a ½ credit per year.  Students must earn two (2) PE credits to meet graduation requirements.
  • In addition to meeting the F.I.T.S requirements, all students in grades 9-12 must earn an overall passing grade (65) for the school year to get their PE credit.
  • Students currently taking lifeguarding or the fitness elective will be exempt from fulfilling the F.I.T.S requirements and will not have to take PE the other half of the school year.
  • For the 2014-2015 school year, students will have the opportunity to opt out of swimming their junior and/or senior years as long as they have:
    • earned two swim credits, maximum one per school year
    • passed the swim skills exit test
    • or received a lifeguard certification during PE class at OM dated 2013 or newer, plus one swim credit
  • If a student opts out of swimming, the student must get a fourth letter from F.I.T.  in order to fulfil the requirements.
  • Each category of F.I.T.S. will be offered at least twice per school year.  There will be one girls’, one boys’, and one co-educational swim unit each year.  The co-ed unit will be the make-up opportunity for anyone in need of a swim credit and take place during the sixth marking period.

Class Materials 
 
  • Students are required to change from his/her school clothes into appropriate attire:
    • Acceptable footwear:  Sneakers laced and tied tightly.

Athletic shorts must be of modest length with no exposure of undergarments or bottom. (No denim (jeans), cargo
75% - Participation will be graded daily on a ten point scale and will be based on effort, self control, fair play, respect for others and equipment, and demonstration and application of rules, skills and concepts during actual activity. 
 

  • Students have five minutes from the late bell to get changed and report to the gym ready to participate. Points will be deducted from the daily participation grade if a student is late for class.
  • Students choosing not to change will not be allowed to participate and will lose all ten points.  Students are permitted to make up one (1) zero participation grade per marking period. This must be done during study hall.  If study hall is not an option due to scheduling, students must come in twice for 15 minutes each from 3-3:15 after school.
  • Locker rooms are off limits except during allotted changing time, unless permission is granted otherwise.
  • Daily participation points will be earned based on the following:
    • 10               Student meets or exceeds expectations. These expectations include changing into appropriate attire for class, being on task, interacting in a mature and positive way with all students and staff, following directions and participating in a safe manner.
    • 0-9              Represents a loss in points. Points will be taken away for being late out of the locker room as well as behaviors that are considered counterproductive to the goals and objectives of each lesson (such as listed above). Reasons for major or repeated point loss will be documented on the back of the student’s card.

25% - Knowledge and skills may be assessed through written tests, quizzes, reports, skills tests, and skill and rule application.
 
New this year:  The final exam will count as a seventh grade for the yearly average.
 
Attendance Policy
 
Absences
 
  • Two (2) absences per marking period will not affect a student’s grade, for events such as band lessons, legal absences from school, field trips, etc.
  • Missed classes beyond two must be made up within five school days, as stated in the school attendance policy.  Any missed work or classes must be made up within five school days upon return to school or will be calculated as a zero in the grade book.

*It is your responsibility to see your PE teacher for making up missed classes.
Health Office Policy

 
Daily Excuses/Personal Notes –
 
 

  • The nurses’ office does not provide notes for students to be excused from PE class due to illnesses or other reasons.
  • You must have a pass from your PE teacher before going to the nurses’ office unless it is a real emergency.
  • Any note brought from home will be treated as a one day nurse’s note to be made up before the end of the marking period.  Students will need to see a physician to be excused for more than one class.
  • Missed classes due to a medical excuse from a physician will not be made up.  You should bring your doctor’s note to the health office and these should be updated every thirty (30) days.  The following procedures have been set up for medical situations in order to meet PE requirements:
    • Student will be given activity modifications.
    • Student will participate in alternative activity. (If the student is assigned to walking, he/she will complete a walking log.)
    • Student will be moved to opposite PE class.
    • If unable to meet any of the above criteria, student will report to PE class and then be sent to the library and required to complete written assignments to earn PE credit.
      • It is the student’s responsibility to get the assignments from their PE teacher.
      • There will be a one page assignment per week when a medical exceeds two PE days.

  • All students will participate in a swim unit, unless they have met the requirements as stated above.
  • If a student has a medical excuse from swimming, he/she needs this before their swim unit begins.  If this is not the case, the student will be responsible for making up all classes missed prior to receiving their note.  Otherwise, the student will receive a zero for participation points up to the note is received by the health office.
  • Students will use the locker rooms located by the pool.  It is his/her responsibility as a student to remember his/her swimsuit and towel for class each day during the swim unit.
  • Girls should see Mrs. Kramer regarding personal excuses during the swim unit.
  • All valuables should be left at home or locked in your school locker

  2. Swim a continuous 400 yard swim (no time limit) using freestyle and/or breaststroke. You cannot stand/walk in the shallow end, hold the side or stop at either end. You must touch the wall and immediately push off.
  3. Tread water for two minutes.
  4. Retrieve object with hands from pool bottom in chest deep water.
  5. Successfully perform a feet first entry in the deep end, resurface, and swim non-stop to the shallow end.
  6. Demonstrate either a “feet first” or “headfirst” surface dive proficiently
