Newfield High School National Honor Society Bylaws
 
 
 
Introduction
 
Local chapters of the National Honor Society abide by the national constitution of National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The local bylaws provide guidelines for local chapter operation and are consistent with the constitution and policies established by the National Council; their purpose is to implement that constitution.
 
 
ARTICLE I               NAME           
 
Newfield High School National Honor Society
 
 
ARTICLE II             PURPOSE
 
The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.
 
ARTICLE III                        GOVERNANCE
 
The control of the local chapter is guided by the National Council Constitution. The group is governed by the chapter advisor, the Faculty Council, and the principal. The chapter advisor is appointed by the principal and shall be responsible for the direct, day-to-day supervision of the chapter. The Faculty Council shall consist of five voting faculty members appointed annually by the chapter advisor and the principal. The chapter advisor shall be an ex-officio, non-voting, sixth member of the Faculty Council. The term of the Faculty Council is one year. The principal shall reserve the right to approve all activities and decisions of the chapter.
 
ARTICLE IV                        MEMBERSHIP
 
Membership in local chapters is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is by a Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities. Membership shall be known as active, honorary, and graduate.
 
 
ARTICLE V             SELECTION OF MEMBERS
 
To be eligible for membership, the candidate must be a member of the junior or senior class. Candidates must have a cumulative scholastic average of at least 89.00%. Candidates shall then be evaluated on the basis of service, leadership, and character. The selection of each member to the chapter shall be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council. The selection process is published by the school district. Dismissal from the group shall be determined by the principal and adviser. Failure to keep a cumulative average of 89 % or better will result in a probation period of one marking period to raise one’s cumulative average to 89% or better.
 
ARTICLE VI                     Meetings
 
Executive meetings will be held every week for officersand executive committee, while general membership meetings will be held once per month for a minimum of 45 minutes each.  Meetings will be scheduled by the advisor and principal after consulting with the membership, and may be revised as needed.Attendance will be taken at every meeting. Failure to attend meetings will result warnings and possible termination from the program. Special meetings may need to be called for some of the larger projects that we are involved in and attendance will be required.
 
ARTICLE VII          Duties and responsibilities of the organization, officers and
                                    adviser, and members
 
The National Honor Society organization is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the developments of character in secondary school students.
 
The Adviser will represent the administrative office of the school to ensure procedures are being followed and to be an advocate to protect the interest of students. The adviser will be familiar with local and national guidelines of the National Honor Society as well as the student handbooks. All information and discussion regarding students is to be objective in nature. Whether for selection or discipline the faculty adviser serves to guarantee that each student receives a fair review.
 
Members are expected to continue to demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership and good character. Members are to attend all meetings and be involved in all activities. Failure to attend meetings will result warnings and possible termination from the program.Members will pursue, contribute and document one hour of volunteer service beyond the requirements of clubs or athletic teams per month.
 
An annual chapter dues of $10.00 will be contributed by each member.
 
 
 
 
Officers will be voted on by the members. The positions will include: president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. The president will call meetings to order, maintain order and be constantly aware of and manage all activity of the organization. The vice-president will assist the president and be ready and able to assume his/her duties in event of absence or other problem. She or he will also serve in the area of public relations for the organization, working with other officers and the advisors to send out announcements and publishinformation about the NHS. The secretary will be responsible for maintaining meeting attendance records, mailing all minutes to members, and keeping track of points for the end-of-the-year points picnic. The treasurer will keep an accurate record of all transactions that occur. A report of funds will be relayed at each meeting.
 
ARTICLE VIII          Procedure for election of officers, removal from office and
                                    filling vacancies.
 
Elections of officers are to be determined by the membership. For all officer election systems, democratic principles of operation will be applied. Failure to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of one’sposition may result in removal from that position. Removal from one’sposition will be determined by the members and voted on by all members.

ARTICLE X              Methods and procedure for ratification and amendments of
                                    the bylaws.
 
Bylaws will be approved by the faculty council, administration and present members of the chapter. Bylaws that need to be added, deleted or amended will be done by the adviser and given final approval by the faculty council, administration and present members.
