Consultant Teacher: Earth Science

One of my jobs as a special education teacher is to be a consultant  teacher. The following is an explanation of what it means to be a consultant teacher.

Where does a consultant teacher work?

  • Works with a general education teacher in the general education classroom
  • Meets with the general education teacher to discuss plans for best meeting the needs of students who receive consultant teacher services

What does a consultant teacher do for students receiving consultant teacher services within the general education class?
  • Provides specially designed instruction to meet students' instructional needs
  • Gives individual or small group help
  • Reviews material with students
  • Explains concepts in different ways
  • Provides notes, study guides, and supplemental materials for students who need them
  • Helps students work on their IEP goals within the general education class
  • Whatever is needed to help students who receive consultant teacher services succeed in the general education classroom

Does a consultant teacher work ONLY with students in special education?
  • No. Consultant teachers help all students in the class but focus on the needs of students who receive consultant teacher services.
