One of my jobs as a special education teacher is to be a consultant teacher. The following is an explanation of what it means to be a consultant teacher.
Where does a consultant teacher work?
- Works with a general education teacher in the general education classroom
- Meets with the general education teacher to discuss plans for best meeting the needs of students who receive consultant teacher services
What does a consultant teacher do for students receiving consultant teacher services within the general education class?
- Provides specially designed instruction to meet students' instructional needs
- Gives individual or small group help
- Reviews material with students
- Explains concepts in different ways
- Provides notes, study guides, and supplemental materials for students who need them
- Helps students work on their IEP goals within the general education class
- Whatever is needed to help students who receive consultant teacher services succeed in the general education classroom
Does a consultant teacher work ONLY with students in special education?
- No. Consultant teachers help all students in the class but focus on the needs of students who receive consultant teacher services.
