Special Class: Earth Science and English 11 & 12

One of my jobs as a special education teacher is to be a special class teacher. There are special classes made up of different numbers of students depending on students' needs. My special classes are typically called 15:1 classes. The following is an explanation of what it means to be a 15:1 teacher.

Where does a 15:1 teacher work?

  • A 15:1 teacher works with a small group of up to 15 students in a separate classroom.

What subjects does a 15:1 teacher teach?

  • These teachers typically teach four major content areas: English, Social Studies, Math, and Science.

How is a 15:1 classroom different from the general education classroom?

  • A 15:1 classroom gives students access to the general education curriculum while meeting their needs with small group/individualized instruction.
  • A 15:1 classroom allows students to work on their IEP goals with the direct support of a special education teacher.
