One of my jobs as a special education teacher is to be a resource room teacher. The following is an explanation of what it means to be a resource room teacher.
Where does a resource room teacher work?
- Works in a small group setting with a maximum of 5 students at one time
What does a resource room teacher do for students?
- Helps students work on their IEP goals
- Helps students build skills in areas of weakness
- Reviews and/or reteaches material from the general education curriculum
- Assists students with improving their work for their general education classes
- Works with students on specific skills or topics when requested to do so by the general education teacher
- Assists students with difficult assignments when needed
- Helps students work toward their post-secondary goals by engaging students in transition activities as specified in their IEPs
What is one common misconception regarding resource room?
- Students sometimes view resource room as a study hall. However, we must follow federal regulations regarding the definition of a resource room. As a result, resource room is not a study hall. In resource room, students receive supports that are not available in study hall. They are also required to do skill building and review that is not required in a study hall.
