Guided Reading

Guided Reading:

Students are learning to read with fluency, build vocabulary and comprehend what is being read.  In daily guided reading centers, the students will read leveled books with a teacher guiding them through their book journey.

Reading Strategies:

We strongly encourage pleasure reading on a daily basis, for about 20 minutes per session.  When reading at home students should first take a picture walk, looking at all the details of the illustrations to collect as much initial data as possible.

When reading the students should: look for words inside of words, look at pictures for clues, ask themselves, "Does that word make sense?".  All of these skills help the students develop an understanding of the story.

After reading the story, with your child, please make sure to ask some comprehension questions.  Some comprehension questions are:

1. Who is the author and illustrator?  2. Who are the main characters?  3.  Where is the setting?  4. What is the problem and solution (if applicable) 5. What was your favorite part?  6. Would you change the ending of the story?  If so, how?
