School Counseling Services

What is a School Counselor?

School Counselors are New York State Certified to support students within the areas of academics, career exploration and social/emotional development.

Academics

We continuously meet with students, teachers and parents to talk about student progress.  This may be done individually with the student or may involve a parent/teacher meeting.  Our utmost goal is to help students be successful within the classroom.

We recommend that students and their parents or guardians log into School Tool Regularly to check your grades, you’ll be able to track your progress and make sure you’re not missing any assignments. Please contact the Middle School Main Office to get access to our Parent Portal, the phone number is (607) 565-3410.

If your student is struggling, we encourage you and them to reach out to their teachers. They are here to help your child succeed, and are willing to work with you and your student to make that happen.

Career Development

We work with Ryan Alo, High School Assistant Principal for Work Based Learning to provide career exploration to students. We host a career day for students in 5th-8th grade.

We also develop Career Plans annually for students in 6th-8th grade to help them reflect on their experiences, interests, abilities, and more in an effort to explore career possibilities and options.

In 2020, we will begin to utilize Choices 360 as a Career Exploration and Development Tool.

Social/Emotional Development

We provide individual, group, and crisis counseling as well as peer mediation based on student need.  We work closely with outside agencies to connect families with support.  Crisis and long term counseling is referred to these agencies (Suicidal Ideation, self-harm, Anxiety/Anger/Depression, Abuse).
  • On a daily basis, we work with students and parents regarding attendance, academics, behaviors and social/emotional concerns.
  • We also Lunch Bunch Groups throughout the School Year that focus on different topics and skills like Social Skills, Organization, and more.
