1st Grade Overview

Welcome To 1st Grade!

In this overview, we (the first grade teachers) try to give you an idea of the type of basic programs we have in first grade. Please keep in mind that, as each child is different, so is each teacher. All teachers will be instructing to meet the new Core Curriculum standards, however; teaching techniques and classrooms will differ. We hope this outline provides you with an understanding of how we anticipate creating a successful year for your child. J

Language Arts

Our new language arts series Treasures by McGraw-Hill integrates reading, phonics, writing, spelling and handwriting together in weekly lessons.  We will follow the Treasures 5 day cycle. Spelling words will come home on Day 1 of the cycle and 4 days later there will be a test.  The spelling tests will not always be on Fridays so your child’s teacher will clearly indicate when they will be. Reading instruction is on grade level and whole group. Small group instruction and learning centers provide differentiated instruction to meet your child’s individual abilities. We encourage students to use the lines of the paper correctly, to space words properly, and to work neatly.  Students are expected to read at home every day.

Math
Our math program is a combination of resources including Everyday Math, Clinics, and online   resources to support the new Core Curriculum for mathematics. Some of the topics that will be covered include adding & subtracting, sequencing numbers, measuring, working with data, and geometry. Homework assignments will be given throughout the year to reinforce skills.

Science/Health
The science series we use is McGraw-Hill. The content areas include, but are limited to, the study of plants, animals, weather, the sky, caring for the Earth, seasons, health, and an introduction to matter.

 Social Studies
The social studies series we use is Scott-Foresman. The content areas include, but are limited to, the study of communities, family, citizenship, diversity, map skills, holidays, and current events.

First grade, of course is not all work!  The children are also involved with art, music, physical education, library, and computer education. Throughout the year the children are continually working on seasonal crafts, educational games, and special events.

We do stress developing good work and study habits in all areas – working quietly and neatly, and completing tasks before play. We encourage the children to accept the responsibility of completing assigned work – this includes listening and following directions.

We welcome you to the first grade and hope this year will be both a happy and successful period in your child’s life.
