Homework

 First Grade Homework

Homework will be sent home every Friday and will include the following:

Spelling Word List: To be kept at home. Please study the list of words during the week. We will have our spelling test every Friday morning. My expectation for handwriting is that each letter of the word is neat and formed correctly on the line, no backwards letters.

Sight Word List: To be kept at home. First grade sight words are some of the most frequently used words in the English language and account for approximately 50-70% of the words in a general text. One of the most important goals in teaching young students to read is making sure they are completely proficient with sight words. I will test the children every Friday morning on their ability to recognize and read each of the words on the list.

Math Homelinks: The math pages are activities that review the math skills covered during the previous weeks lessons. Please complete these papers at your convenience during the week and return them to school in the homework folder on Friday.

Math Flashcards: Will be sent home the second half of the school year to prepare for weekly math fact tests

Nightly Reading: Please record any reading you do with your child at home. Our school wide policy expects that you read for at least 10 minutes every day Monday-Thursday, but we encourage you to read every night to ensure your child’s success this year in reading.   This can be done at bedtime, after dinner or whenever is convenient for you and your family. It can also be done with a parent, older sibling, or any other positive role model. The students are welcome to check out books from our classroom library that are on their reading level or a book that interests them. If your child has chosen to read a book that is too difficult please read the book to them. If your child selects a book that they can read to you please give them all of your attention and patience as they read and provide a lot of praise.
It is very important to make your reading time a very positive experience during this stage of development.
