How do I know if my child is reading on grade level?

Your child will develop their reading at their own pace.  As parents and educators we are always available to teach strategies, guide, model, encourage and practice reading with your child.  Please refer to the Reading Assessment form that I send home quarterly, with the report card, to track your child's reading progress.

How can I keep track of how my child's progress in all social and academic areas?

I will send home a weekly report every other week in the Friday Folder.  Reports will not be sent during conference or report card weeks.  If you ever have questions about your child's progress in school please email, call or send a note to schedule a conference.

How do you, as the teacher, keep track of my child's progress?

Diagnostic Assessments are used to determine an individual's understanding of fundamental concepts and skills and their ability to use and apply those skills and strategies. Diagnostic assessments allow the teacher to determine how to build or deepen the student's understanding of the concepts, skills, or strategies that will be taught. Diagnostic Assessments should identify the next steps for instructing the student.

Examples of Diagnostic assessments in my classroom include:

  • Running Records with an analysis of the miscues (Reading A-Z Benchmark Assessments)
  • Informal inventories
  • Individual listening, speaking, reading, and writing tasks
  • Quarterly District-wide First Grade Math Assessments

Formative Assessments are ongoing assessment used to determine how well students are working toward an objective or expectation.

Examples of Formative Assessment in my classroom include:

  • use of checklists
  • Reading and Writing conferences
  • self-assessment
  •  observation

Summative Assessments are the collection of data to measure the product of learning.

Examples of Summative Assessments in my classroom include:

  • observations
  • performance work
  • writing journals
  • writing portfolios
  • self-assessments/checklists
  • additional assessment instruments and rubrics.
