Notetaking

Description: In this semester long class, you will study and apply the theory of speedwriting using SuperWrite. This abbreviated writing system will enhance your ability to take down notes clearly, concisely, and quickly. Students will primarily use pencil and paper to learn this method. You will, however, get the opportunity to use the computer lab, when available, for transcription of notes. At college or the workplace, a laptop or notebook computer would be the preferred tool to use for both notetaking and transcription. In this class, you will learn both methods. This course will also help you to improve your spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, and study skills.

The abbreviated writing skills we will learn will be taught using application documents from these cross-curricular subject areas: Fine Arts, Social Studies, Literature, Science, Business & Industry, Sports, Entertainment & Recreation, Technology, and Employment. Each lesson that presents new material is designed to teach a specific notetaking skill and a specific study skill. Lessons contain such topics as making and using notes successfully, improving memory, strategies for taking exams, and writing research papers.

The skills and methods used to teach this course support all instructional areas, the NYS Learning Standards for Career Development and Occupational Studies and the SCANS skills.
