Mrs. Bull
Grade Level 9-12
Basic Studio Art

Course Description:
Basic Studio is a foundation course which presents technical skills needed to solve problems in art. Creative emphasis is on ways of seeing and thinking, recognition and critical consideration of existing art work and appreciation of students own experiences to suggest ideas.
We will examine the value and function of art within a variety of contexts, and identify connections between historical art forms, contemporary art, and your own experiences.
Students will propose, devise and execute a number of projects which effectively demonstrate and understanding of the cultural and social relevancies of art, and how it relates to life.
Although many modes of two and three dimensional expression will be considered and applied, an underlying emphasis on drawing and design will be propelled to help you narrow the gap between your observational and representational skills.
Each new unit/ lesson will start with a lecture or technical demonstration and a class discussion. As you gain control of the material or technique, more complex applications are encouraged. Some units will culminate in a major project.
A final test will be given at the end of the school year. The test will be based on prior knowledge and projects within the class. Students will be allowed to use their workbooks to remind them of the projects and art terms that were discussed throughout the year.
Conduct:
Studios are potentially dangerous. Proper and safe behavior is important for a safe and productive atmosphere.
Homework:
Homework is important when it is assigned. Although most work will be done in class, it will be necessary to spend time outside of class to finish some projects. The art room is open at least 2 days after school and during a student’s study hall as long as the class room is not over crowded.
Grades are determined by the following:
1.       Project grades- 60% of a student’s grade
2.       Attendance-20% of a student’s grade
3.       Workbook-20% of a student’s grade.

Projects will be geared toward enhancing the ability to understand and use art effectively. It is the student’s responsibility to do the work, and to make up any work. If you want to pass this course do the work and be willing to take responsibility for your work.
Project grades will be determined by the following:
1.       Successful completion of the project and Rules
2.       Neatness, craftsmanship and presentation
3.       Mounted complete piece of artwork
Workbook grades will be given throughout the year on completion of assignments.
Unproductive behavior which interferes with others ability to work and or succeed will result in removal from the classroom.
